Chassis:
As a rolling chassis, this 680 S was delivered to coachbuilder Erdmann & Rossi in February of 1928. Here it was fitted with a Sports Tourer body of which just a handful were fitted to this type of chassis. At the end of the year, it was shipped to the United States, where it arrived at the Mercedes-Benz Company in New York on January 23. It was sold to its first private owner in April. The identity of this custodian was not recorded but he was clearly a great enthusiast as the car resurfaced during the 1960s in excellent condition. It passed through several hands before it was acquired by Ed Swearingen from San Antonio, Texas. He had the car meticulously restored before debuting it at the 1996 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Here it promptly received the best in class award and a special award for the most elegant open car. In subsequent years, it returned to Europe for the first time in eight decades where it was part of two prominent collections before being offered at the 2017 Bonhams Scottsdale sale. Rare features that have been beautifully reserved are the Carl Zeiss headlights and driving lights and the Bosch horns.
