Chassis:
Following a heavy accident in practice for the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix, the original and hugely successful chassis R5 was set aside. A new car was built up for the 1974 season, using the same identity. It was allocated to new signing Jackie Ickx, who raced it for the better part of two seasons. The Belgian driver won the 1974 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch and also finished on the podium in the Brazilian and British Grands Prix that year. In 1975, Ickx added a second place finish to the car's tally in what was the Type 72's sixth season. Following a pair of outings with Brian Henton at the wheel late in the season, the car's contemporary career finally came to an end. The second chassis R5 is today owned by Classic Team Lotus and is regularly raced and demonstrated.
