Chassis:
Although commissioned through Charles Follett of Mayfair, exactly who this 540 K was ordered new for is not sure. It was believed to be either a French racing driver or Eastern Prince. Regardless, the car was built by Mercedes-Benz to the highest specification with the engine set slightly further back into the chassis than on the standard 540 K. Sold as a rolling chassis, it was then clothed by the little known Mayfair Carriage Company with a body that was clearly inspired by Count Trossi's famous SSK. Among the two-seater Tourer's many striking features were the numerous chrome accents and the covered rear wheels. The car remained in London throughout the War and was eventually sold to Canada in 1955. Sadly, the car was damaged extensively in a garage fire in 1960. Thanks to Richard C. Mertz and his son's enthusiasm, the unique Mayfair 540 K was saved. The surviving metalwork served as a mould for a brand new wooden sub structure. Eventually, the car took over two decades to restore. In 1995, it was acquired by the Imperial Palace Collection and was then owned by General William Lyon between 2002 and 2007. In 2011, the subsequent owner brought the car to Pebble Beach to celebrate 125th Anniversary of Mercedes-Benz.
