Chassis:
Completed in May of 1983, this 956 was ready in time for first owner John Fitzpatrick Racing to field the car in that year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. Shared by Fitzpatrick himself, Dieter Quester and David Hobbs, it ran as high as third before a fuel pump failure saw the 956 drop out. Fitzpatrick subsequently placed the car fourth in the Norisring Trophy before shipping it to North America. Not eligible in IMSA events, it was raced instead in several Can-Am Challenge rounds. At the Watkins Glen round, Fitzpatrick scored an outright victory; the only win for a 956 in North America. Upon its return to Europe, it was driven to victory in the Brands Hatch 1000km by Fitzpatrick and Derek Warwick, who beat the factory cars. Now in the ownership of Lord Vestey, it continued to be raced into the 1984 season. Its final contemporary outing came at Le Mans where it ran as high as 11th before retiring. It was then sold to Porsche enthusiast Jamey Mazzotta through dealer Adrian Hamilton. Mazzotta would own the car through to September of 2002 when it joined a prominent British Porsche collection. It has been restored to its 1983 Le Mans livery and configuration.
