Chassis:
One of the very last 540 Ks built, this Cabriolet A was equipped with the rare five-speed gearbox. In April of 1939, it was delivered new to Liberia's Consul-General to Hamburg Henry Ford Cooper. He left the country in 1943 and with it his 540 K. In 1954, it was acquired by an American soldier and by that time, it had been modernised with components from a contemporary Mercedes-Benz 300. The car remained in North America for just over two decades and was then owned by a German enthusiast for several years. From his collection, it was acquired by Jordan's King Hussein. He was a great collector and during the early 1990s had chassis 408386 fully restored to its original configuration in Germany. He cherished the car until his death in 1999 and it was then retained by his family for a further two decades. They finally decided to part with the great Mercedes-Benz and consigned it to the Bonhams Grand Palais sale in early February of 2019.
