Chassis:
This 500KK was built by Steve Salem, who combined the Kurtis supplied chassis with the Byers SR-100 body that was launched to high acclaim at the 1953 Los Angeles Motorama. It was fitted with a GMC in-line six to race in the 1954 Carrera Panamericana. Unfortunately, it was not completed in time to compete in the great Mexican road race. Instead, it was raced extensively on the West Coast between 1955 and 1962. The Byers bodied Kurtis also starred in the 'Trend Book, Sportscar Specials' in 1958 and the same pictures were later also used in Jim Byers' promotional materials. Despite its long racing career, the car survived in great condition and was acquired by its longtime custodian in the 1980s. He meticulously restored the car and fitted it with a period-correct DeSoto Firedome HEMI V8 engine. Once the restoration was completed, it was shown at Pebble Beach and since then has been regularly raced in historic events. In 2006, it was restored once more.
