Chassis:
The first of the two T55s built ahead of the 1961 season, this was the car reserved for defending champion Jack Brabham. He raced the car to a debut victory at Aintree but his best result in a World Championship Grand Prix was a fourth place finish in the British Grand Prix. Fitted with a larger, 2.7-litre engine, it was then raced with great success 'Down Under', with Brabham scoring wins at Lakeside and Sandown Park. It was then sold to John Youl, who would go to race the car for several more seasons with great results. He won races as late as December of 1963 in chassis 10. Following its long contemporary racing career, it was cherished by a succession of private owners. These included Hollywood movie director David Cronenberg, who raced the car in historic events with considerable success. The car was repatriated to Europe and then lovingly restored to its original Cooper works appearance in 2014 by Swiss specialist, the late Urban Fassler. He retained the 2.5-litre Coventry Climax engine that was fitted at the time but other than that the car is in the same configuration as raced by Jack Brabham during the 1961 Formula 1 season. In 2019, the owners decided to donate the car to Sir Jackie Stewart's 'Race Against Dementia' charity for which it was consigned to the Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale at no reserve. All proceeds will benefit the charity.
