Chassis:
Not raced in 1970, this car was build up in 1971 to the latest Langheck or Long Tail specification ahead of the 24 Hours Le Mans. It was entrusted to the Gulf-backed John Wyer Automotive team, who entered it for Jo Siffert and Derek Bell. Starting third, it ran second in the opening stages until it started to suffer from mechanical issues. Chassis 917-045 was eventually forced to retire with transmission failure in the 18th hour of the race. Not raced again, it was eventually restored with the Martini livery used by the sister car. Reportedly, Porsche had a conflict with Gulf at the time, which prompted them to paint the car in colours it was never raced in. Following the restoration, it has been on permanent loan with the Automobile Club de l'Ouest and displayed in the Le Mans Museum. In recent years, it has been brought back to running order and regularly demonstrated at a variety of events. In 2019, it was reunited with Derek Bell at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
