Chassis:
One of four works cars, this chassis was first raced at the Grand Prix de Tourisme at Montlhéry. The Type 39s finished first, second, third and fourth in class with 4607 being driven to third by Giulio Foresti. It was later raced to another third in class at Monza by Foresti, who finished seventh overall. The car was then sold through British distributor Colonel Sorel and reportedly with the help of Foresti himself, to Australia. It first appeared there in June of 1926 on Sydney's high-banked Maroubra Speedway. It continued to be raced with some success well into the 1930s by successive owners. One of the highlights was an outright victory in the 1931 Australian Grand Prix. At some point a supercharger was fitted and subsequently the original engine was replaced by a Ford V8. In this guise, it saw action until 1954. Following a spell in storage, it was sold to Bob King in the late 1970s. With the car came a period correct engine and it was decided to restore the car to its 1925 Italian Grand Prix configuration. The work was completed in the early 1980s. In 1986, the rebuilt chassis 4607 was acquired by California-based collector Art Valdez. He cherished the car but only rarely used it at events during his 31-year tenure as the Grand Prix Bugatti's custodian. The next owner bought the car in 2017 and then consigned it to the February2020 Bonhams Les Grandes Marques du Monde sale at the Grand Palais in Paris.
