Chassis:
This is the unique JC873 that was built around the Audi five-cylinder engine. In 1989, it morphed into the 88 C2 and was briefly raced with MOMO backing in North America. At the end of the 1991 season, the car was retired from contemporary racing. The third owner acquired the car in 2006 and had it prepared for racing with a freshly rebuilt engine by VW/Audi specialists Lehmann Motorentechnik. It was then offered in the September 2018 RM Sotheby's London sale where bids failed to meet the reserve set. Fritz Gebhardt learned of the no-sale and made the owner an offer he could not refuse. Since then, it has been comprehensively restored by many of the mechanics, who had built the car in the first place. Also on hand to help was Bill Harris, who was the original designer. The work was completed just in time for the Monza Historic round of the 2019 Historic Group C Championship. It was driven on the occasion by former Gebhardt racer Michael Herich.
