Chassis:
Through British agent Colonel Sorel, this factory bodied Type 55 was ordered new by Victor Rothschild. Still a physiology student at the time, the future third Baron Rothschild was just 22 years old when he took delivery of chassis 55220. Rothschild's ownership was brief but the car would remain on the British Isles for the next 50 years. Among the subsequent owners was R. MacLeod-Carey, who created a meticulous handbook of his ownership. He acquired the car in 1939 and already sold it in 1940 but nevertheless managed to fill 32 pages with experiences as well as listing the previous owners. During the early 1960s, it entered the long-term ownership of the Murphie family. In December of 1985, it was sold by the Murphy family at a Sotheby's auction for a then staggering £440.000,-. This made it the most expensive car sold at auction in Britain at the time. The fortunate buyer was the late Dean Stockett Edmonds. The American enthusiast entrusted the restoration of the car to Peter Seferian and following his untimely death a year, the work was completed by Donald Koleman. The fabulous workmanship was duly appreciated and awarded with a best in class award at Pebble in 1993. Edmonds would regularly use and show his cherished Bugatti at events until his death in 2018. From his estate, chassis 55220, along with the rest of his fabled collection, has been consigned to headline the 2020 Bonhams Amelia Island Auction.
