Chassis:
Although not actually built by Michelotto, this 308 GTB was converted to Group B specification for 1980 European Rally Champion and a nine-time Spanish Rally Champion Antonio Zanini, using all the right bits provided by the specialist Italian company. The basis for the conversion was a fibreglass bodied road car originally built in 1978. The donor car was picked from the lot of local Ferrari agent Fernando Serena in Barcelona early in 1984. The Serena workshop was also tasked to fit all the Michelotto supplied parts to bring the car to Group B specifications. Unfortunately, the car was not ready in time for the start of the 1984 Spanish Rally Championship. Instead, Zanini rented a similar Group B 308 GTB from Pro Motor Sport. This partnership was so successful that Zanini already clinched the championship before his own 308 GTB was ready.
Zanini finally debuted the car at the Rally Osana, where Zanini immediately secured a victory, finishing four minutes ahead of the second placed car. It was then also unsuccessfully driven by Fernando Serena Jr in the 1984 season finale. For 1985, Zanini was hired by Peugeot, so he did not race the Ferrari again. It did make one final appearance, at the 1985 Rally Catalunya where local specialist Claudio Caba ran as high as fifth until sliding off the road on day two. This proved to be the final contemporary outing as it was retired after just three rallies. Serena kept the car until the late 1980s, when it was acquired by a Spanish businessman. The car finally changed hands again in 2009 and was then bought at auction by an English collector in 2015. He had the car restored to its 1985 Rally Catalunya configuration complete with Spanish jean manufacturer brand Cimarron sponsorship as this colour scheme had been made famous by a Scalextric model.
