Chassis:
This is one of five 911 STs prepared especially for the 1971 East African Safari Rally. Among the changes made to suit this particular need were a strengthened shell, wide rear fender flares, a 40% locking differential and a 25 cm raised right height. Three examples were entered in the rally while this chassis was one of two training cars. After it had served its duty, it was sold to a Swedish enthusiast. It was later sold to Germany where it was painted blue and converted to circuit racing specification. In 2007, it was acquired by an American collector, who spotted some of the features unique to the five ST Rally cars. He duly had the car restored to the East African Safari Rally guise by Porsche specialist Gary Kempton. It was decided to paint the car in the green colours of the Bjorn Waldegard entry. Some four years later, it was acquired by another Porsche enthusiast, who regularly showed and exercised the car. During the late 2010s, ST authority Hugh Hodges discovered that the car had not in fact been the ex-Waldegard machine but instead was one of the two trainingwagen. Accordingly, chassis 0647 entrusted to Ed Palmer of Kundensport for a re-finish in the original light ivory colours. Having owned the ST Rally for nearly a decade, the owner decided to consign it to the August 2020, Gooding & Co. Geared Online sale.
