Chassis:
Chassis '11' was the final development of the original 'W194' 300 SL racing cars. It featured a more efficient body, a shorter wheelbase and a direct injection version of the six cylinder engine. This resulted in a 40 bhp hike in power and 20 km/h top-speed. By the time this evolution of the 300 SL was ready to race, Mercedes-Benz had shifted its focus to the eight-cylinder engined F1 and sports cars. The prototype was extensively tested but eventually never raced. Retained by Mercedes-Benz, it is seen here during the 2010 Retromobile show where the introduction of the similarly styled SLS AMG was celebrated.
