Chassis:
Right towards the end of the production of the Pre-A 356, Porsche started offering the four-cam Carrera engine as an option. It is understood that this competition derived engine was fitted in just fifteen 356s before the 'A' was introduced. Finished in red over tan, this is the seventh of these fifteen early Carrera-engined Speedsters. It was sold new to the United States and delivered to its first owner through the Hoffman Motor Company. It was returned to Hoffman for service in October of 1956 and again in May of 1957 but that is where the known early history ends. By the late 1970s, it resurfaced in Wisconsin and it eventually passed to prominent collector John McCaw. He had the car restored over a two-and-a-half year period by John Willhoit Auto Restoration. It was later sold to Oregon and eventually repatriated to Germany. In the fall of 2020, it was consigned to RM Sotheby's online-only London sale.
