Chassis:
Through London based dealer Jack Barclay, this Type 57 S was commissioned new by Robert Ropner. A member of the Ropner Shipping Line family, he had the car fitted with a stylish four-seater tourer body by Corsica of London. The car is understood to be built on one of three special lightweight frames that had been earmarked for Bugatti's 1936 Type 57G 'Tank' racers. Ropner would own the car through to the end of World War II. It then had a handful of British owners, until it was acquired by Bill Turnbull in 1969. Only the fifth owner from new, Turnbull used the car for a few years and then stripped it down completely. He had very high standards and the subsequent restoration was not completed when he passed away in 2019. Back in one piece and still with its original coach-work, paint and interior, it was consigned by Turnbull's estate to the 2021 London Legends of the Road sale. This rare and largely unspoiled Bugatti is offered at no reserve and has a pre-sale estimate of £5 - £7 million
