Not used in the World Rally Championship, this Quattro S1 E2 was eventually pressed into service for the 1988 Race of Champions at Montlhéry, which served as a tribute to Henri Toivonen. Here it was spotted by Olivier Quesnel, who was in the process of creating a Group B collection for French publisher Michel Hommell and his Manoir de l'Automobile museum. Audi took a considerable amount of persuading but eventually the German manufacturer to let this car go. It was displayed in the museum for three decades but was kept in full running order. Along with the rest of the formidable Group B collection, the S1 E2 was consigned to the 2021 Artcurial Paris sale.
