Chassis:
A works car, this Delta was entered in the 1989 East African Safari Rally for local specialist Vic Preston Jr. He was forced to retire after his gearbox was damaged in an off. His team-mate Miki Biasion did come through to score what was Lancia's first ever victory in the demanding Safari Rally. Fully repaired and prepared for the Acropolis Rally. Here it was driven to fifth by Jorge Recalde. Not used again by the victory, this car was then used by the Top Run rally ream for Recalde for the remainder of the year. The Delta eventually entered the longterm ownership of a rally collector based in Cuneo, Italy. When he acquired the car, it was in tarmac trim but all the Safari bits were supplied with the car. This allowed the Delta to be converted back to its original configuration during the subsequent restoration. Following a spell of 25 years in the same hands, the ex-Safari Rally Delta was consigned to the online only 2021 Bonhams Paris sale.
