Chassis:
Allocated to Bobby Unser, this PC9B was used by the experienced American during the 1981 Indy 500. He qualified the ground effects machine on pole position with an average speed of 200.545 mph. He dominated the race and took his third win in the Indy 500, beating Mario Andretti. The victory was stripped away the following morning after Unser had been penalised one position for passing six cars on the pit exit under a full course yellow. Andretti had been right behind him and immediately radioed in what Unser had done but for unknown reasons no action was taken until the following Monday. Team Penske filed an appeal, stating that had Unser been penalised immediately, he might have made up the ground and taken the victory any way. The appeal board agreed with a 2-1 vote and Unser was declared the winner once again. Today, the winning car is part of a prominent American collection and was brought over to the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed where the Indy 500 centenary was celebrated.
