A works car, this Type 35B was raced during the 1929 season to victory by William Grover-Williams in the French Grand Prix and by Louis Chiron in the Spanish Grand Prix. By that time, Chiron was already the owner of the car. By the early 1930s, it was sold to Germany where it reportedly was registered for the road using the identity of a Type 37A that was already in the country. Having survived the War in beautiful condition, chassis 4938 subsequently sold to the United States. It changed hands twice and then joined the collection of Lawrence Falvey of Detroit, Michigan. He would own the car until his death in 1985. His family had the Type 35B comprehensively restored and it was subsequently shown at the Pebble Beach and Meadow Brook concours in 1989. Chassis 4938 would remain the Falvey family ownership until 2000. It was then acquired by Chris Drake, who had specialists Ivan Dutton Ltd. restore the car once again. In 2006, it was sold back to the United States and shown in the owner's museum of racing cars. Retaining all of its major original components, it was consigned to the 2021 Gooding & Co. Pebble Beach Auctions.
