A works car, this Mk II Cobra was one of three built ahead of the 1963 season to the specification used at the Sebring 12 Hours. It was fitted with the '289' Ford V8 engine and equipped with rack-and-pinion steering. Completed in May, it was campaigned throughout the 1963 USSRC championship in the hands of Bob Bondurant and Ken Miles. Chassis CSX2129 was raced with considerable success, scoring numerous class wins and pole positions. At the end of the year, it was sold to privateer Graham Shaw. He fielded the Sebring spec Cobra with in SCCA throughout the 1964 season. At the end of the year, it was traded back to Shelby American and shown at the 1964 New York World's Fair. It was then raced by several subsequent owners in the Southern California SCCA events between late 1964 and 1966.

Following its lengthy and successful racing career, it was acquired by Bruce Goldsmith. He fitted the car with a new interior and a fresh HiPo short block V8. He reportedly used all the 'hot' Shelby components from the original 289 to build the new engine. Fully restored, chassis CSX2129 next joined the stable of Thomas Long in 1968. He would continue to own the car through to 2011 and used it as his daily driver up until 1984. It was restored and repainted blue, and then shown at a variety of events. For a more comprehensive restoration to its original specification, Long entrusted the Cobra to specialist Mike McCluskey in 1995. The work was completed in 1997 and since then, it has been shown and campaigned at a variety of events. The car's next custodian continued to demonstrate the rare works Cobra with appearances at Pebble Beach, Goodwood and Chantilly.

After a decade of single ownership, the second owner since 1968 decided to consign CSX2129 to the RM Sotheby's Monterey auction.
