Chassis:
One of two Ford engined T90s, this example was raced in the 1966 Indy 500 by Jackie Stewart. He was leading the race until his engine suddenly lost oil pressure with just eight laps to go. In the remainder of the season, chassis SL90/2 was raced by Al Unser, who finished third once and second three times. In October of that year, the car was reunited with Jackie Stewart for the Fuji 200 in Japan. Stewart won the race, beating Bobby Unser in an Eagle.
One of the subsequent owners, Phil Henny, stripped the car and found the American Red Ball livery that was used by Graham Hill during his Indy 500 victory but also by Unser in his outings later in 1966. Henny was not sure which of the two cars he had, but after a comprehensive investigation was convinced that he in fact had the winning car and restored it in these colours. As a rolling chassis, it was sold on to collector David Uihlein in 1983. He sourced a correct engine but it was not rebuilt to full running order yet.
In 1995, it joined a formidable collection of Indy racers and the new owner started to restore the car once again with an eye on returning it to full running order. Like Henny, he spent many years tracing the car's history and true identity and eventually came to a different conclusion; it was SL90/2, the car Stewart raced at Indy and Fuji. In 2017, the owner commissioned Walter Goodwin to restore the car to its original Bowles Seal Fast Special colours.
In 2021, the ex-Stewart and ex-Al Unser Lola was consigned to the Gooding Pebble Beach Auctions after a single ownership of over 25 years.
