Chassis:
Jaguar built eleven XK140s as rolling chassis only and this is one of four clothed by Ghia with very similar Coupe style bodies. Acquired by French industrialist Hans Altweg, this car was the first of these four. Thanks to its aluminium body, it was actually 100 kg lighter than the regular production XK140. The work was completed in time for the car to be shown at the 1956 Paris Auto Salon. It was later also shown at the Cannes Concours d'Elegance. In 1959, the car was involved in an accident and received a modified front, supposedly by Ghia. The modifications served to make the car easier to run in rallies and hill climbs and were carried out for subsequent owner Jean-Louis Berthelot-Mariat. In 1969, it was acquired by Jaguar enthusiast and historian Roland Urban. He extensively campaigned the car in historic rallies and races throughout the 1970s. It was parked in a garage in 1979 and only recently emerged. Still in as-found condition, it was consigned to the 2021 Bonhams Zoute sale.
