Chassis:
Hamburg based tyre importer Richard Leder acquired this 934 ahead of the 1976 season. He won at Kassel Calden in May but then damaged the car in an accident. Sadly, Leder passed away shortly thereafter in a road accident. The repaired 934 was then raced by Volker Merl, who had it upgraded to 934½ over the following winter. In this guise, Merl drove the 934 to victory at the Avus round of the national championship. By the start of the 1978 season, the car had been acquired by Swiss racer Peter Zbinden. He would go on to campaign chassis 930 670 0172 for three years, scoring 16 class and overall victories in over 30 starts. By 1980, it had been upgraded to full 935 specification and it continued to be raced by subsequent owners well into the 1980s. The final period racer of the car was Peter Baumann. After he retired the car, he meticulously restored the car to its original, 934 specification, using all the parts that had been removed but retained with the car. Part of a collection for many years, and rarely seen in public, this extensively raced but remarkably well preserved 934 was eventually consigned to the 2021 RM Sotheby's London sale.
