Chassis:
The third of three 5000 GTs clothed by Touring with a very distinct design, this example was shown at the 1960 Geneva Motor Show. Modified, it was again on display later in the year, at the Turin Motor Show. It was retained by Maserati, and even used to test an experimental 3.8-litre version of the V8 engine during 1961. Re-fitted with a five-litre engine, it was then sold to a member of the Orsi family. In 1965, it was returned to the factory where it was fully rebuilt for its new owner, Prince Abdel Majid bin-Saud of Saudi Arabia. It returned from the Middle East during the 1980s and has since been owned by several prominent European and American collectors. Its most recent custodian submitted the 5000 GT to a complete restoration to the configuration it first left the factory in, in 1961. Although the work was not completed yet, it was consigned to the 2022 Gooding online-online only Scottsdale auction, waiting for a new owner to finish the restoration.
