Chassis:
One of two Group 5 320s sold new to Freddy Laufer's Faltz Racing team, this example was raced during the 1977 season by Harald Grohs. Liveried in the iconic Jägermeister colours, it did not have the best of seasons. Grohs started the year by finishing fourth in the DRM race at Zolder but then suffered a variety of reliability issues. Later in the year, Zolder was again the scene of the best result of the year as Grohs finished third behind two works BMWs. At the end of the 1977 season, chassis E21 R1-06 was retired and it then spent several years in the showroom of a BMW dealer. It then changed hands several times and was eventually offered for sale in a disassembled state at a judicial auction in France in 2002. Still in bits, it was acquired by a Swiss enthusiast in 2008 and he oversaw a complete, six-year restoration. To ensure the work was as accurate as possible, the owner made several trips to Freddy Laufer, who had retained many of the important documents concerning the car and its racing career. Only rarely seen in public since, it was consigned to RM Sotheby's in 2022 as a private treaty sale.
