Completed in May of 1965, this Cobra 427 Competition was initially used as the press demonstrator. It was featured on the cover of the November, 1965 issue of Sports Car Graphic magazine. Chassis CSX3011 was then used on the Shelby Cobra Caravan publicity tour with the rest of the Shelby. Early in 1966, it was loaned to the MGM movie studio to star on the motion picture Spinout alongside Elvis Presley. In October of that year, it was finally sold to its first private owner, Formula One driver Moisés Solana Arciniega. The Mexican driver campaigned the car extensively both in his native Mexico and the United States. His racing career came to an abrupt end when he crashed fatally another competition car in a hill-climb event in July of 1969. From his estate, the Cobra was sold to Juan Carlos Bolanos who continued to race the car for several more years. During the late 1970s, the rare 427 Competition was tracked down in Mexico by Cobra specialist Jim Southard. It then passed to another Cobra enthusiast, who had Brian Angliss perform a bare frame up restoration. The car was sold on in 1993 but then bought back by the same enthusiast in 2006. It was restored again, to its original configuration by Cobra Automotive. Shown at only a select number of events since, it was consigned to the 2023 RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale.
