Chassis:
The first of four 643 F1s built during the 1991 season, this example was first pressed into service at the French Grand Prix. Jean Alesi managed to record a fourth place finish in his home race and then retired from the British Grand Prix. For the next three races, chassis 127 served as a spare. It was not seen again until the season finale, the Australian Grand Prix. It was used by Gianni Morbidelli in his sole Grand Prix for Ferrari after Alain Prost had vacated the seat. The Italian finished sixth but received just a half point for his efforts as the race was stopped after just 16 laps due adverse weather conditions. After the car was refurbished, it was sold to prominent South African Ferrari collector Leonard Smith. He would retain the car until his passing in 2010. It remained in South African hands before it was passed to German specialists Modena Motorsport for a comprehensive rebuild in 2017. It has since been used for select events before it was consigned to the 2023 RM Sotheby’s Paris sale.
