Chassis:
The factory coach builder at Sindelfingen fitted this 500 K chassis with Offener Tourenwagen or open touring car bodywork for first owner Rudolf Hess. A high ranking member of the German National Socialist Workers’ Party, Hess famously flew solo to Scotland in 1941 in an attempt to get Britain to withdraw from the War. He was arrested instead, leaving his 500 K to eventually fall in the hands of an American GI. It was eventually brought to the United States and in 1955, it was in the ownership of V. Link Milsark of West Virginia. He was a member of the Classic Car Club of America but never actually showed the car during his five decades of ownership. In 2005, it joined the collection of the late Mark Smith. He rightly cherished the highly original and numbers matching Mercedes-Benz. At the 2006 Pebble Beach, it won the pre-War preservation class. One of just five 500 K Offener Tourenwagen known to exist, it was entrusted to Gooding for a dedicated auction in April of 2023.
