Chassis:
Specifically for the 1956 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Porsche fitted two of the 550A sports cars with a distinct coupe bodywork. Chassis 0104 was entered for Richard von Frankenburg and Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips by the works team. After the sister car retired from the class lead, this car grabbed the class lead and scored victory, finishing fifth overall despite its diminutive engine. It was subsequently sold to American privateer racer John Edgar. He campaigned the car through to the summer of 1958 with considerable success. It was raced for many more years by subsequent owners who extensively modified the car following accidents and mechanical failures. It lived in relative obscurity until 2004, when it joined the formidable Porsche collection of Dr. Julio Palmaz. He had his in-house restoration company carefully restore chassis 0104 back to its Le Mans class winning configuration. Believed to be the sole surviving 550A Coupe, it has only rarely been shown since. In 2023, it was consigned as one of the star cars to the RM Sotheby’s Monterey Auction.
