Chassis:
Completed in 1914, this Raceabout benefited from all the improvements made during the Type 35-J production run, which included the introduction of a four-speed gearbox. While its earliest history is unknown, chassis 1967 has a documented provenance stretching back to the 1930s when it was owned by the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company of New York. In 1944, it famously joined the stable of pioneer collector James Melton. He would own the car for 15 years and it then changed hands only a few times before joining the longterm ownership of the late Jerry S. Foley III at the expense of a $37,500 and a 1912 Pierce Arrow. One of the previous custodians had had the car meticulously restored by Ralph Buckley during the mid-1960s. The centrepiece of the Foley Collection for five decades, it was only rarely shown. One of only very four-speed Type 35-J Raceabouts known to have survived, it was consigned by the estate to the 2023 Gooding Pebble Beach Auctions.
