Chassis:
While LeBaron produced 27 Phaeton bodies for the Model J chassis, this is the only one that combines the ‘Barrelside’ style with a long wheelbase chassis. It was originally finished in a two-tone beige and brown colourscheme and set first owner William Keane Ryan Jr back a staggering $18,000. The heir of a vast tobacco, insurance and transportation fortune was just 28 years old at the time and had the car delivered in Paris for an extensive road trip around Europe. Ryan brought the car back with him to New York a year later and immediately sold it on. During the next five decades, it had just five enthusiast custodians before it entered a long-term family ownership in 1979. Shortly after acquiring the unique Barrelside Phaeton, it was submitted to an extensive restoration. Once the work was completed, it was shown at a variety of events and also featured on the cover of a magazine. From the 1990s, it was only rarely seen but continued to be meticulously maintained. Having been with the same family for nearly 45 years, it was finally consigned the 2023 Gooding Pebble Beach Auctions.
