Chassis:
Picked up personally by Pierre Popoff at Fiorano, this F40 was completed in July of 1990. Based in Northern Italy, Popoff was a personal friend of Enzo Ferrari and a construction magnate who had helped construct the Mugello circuit. He decided to enter the F40 in the 1992 Italian GT Championship. At first Popoff entrusted the car to Nicodemi to prepare the F40 but soon after sent it to Michelotto to build it to GT specification. Finished in a red and blue livery, it was raced under the Ferrari Club Italia banner. His best result in 1992 was a third overall at Misano. The following year, his form improved as Popoff scored regular top six finishes. In 1994, he finished in the top of every race he entered, scoring a victory at Binetto. Having been raced for three seasons, 85690 was retired from active duty and returned to road specification. In 1997, it was sold to the United Kingdom. Here, it was eventually restored by DK Engineering to F40 GT specification although it remained road legal with the F40 TPO registration number. In 2023, it was consigned to the exclusive RM Sotheby’s Las Vegas sale.
