One of the 1957 Works racer, chassis 4505 was raced by 1955 winners Sir Stirling Moss and Dennis Jenkinson in the Mille Miglia. Unfortunately they were forced to retire with a mechanical failure. In its further outings in 1957 this 450S suffered the same fate. Halfway through the season, it was rebuilt with an enlarged engine and believed to have been sold to Temple Buell in the United States. Early in 1958, the 450S was acquired by Jim Hall, who would go on to build the legendary Chaparrals. He had the 'Big Bazooka' raced by Carroll Shelby with a victory at Palm Springs late in 1958 as the highlight. This car was raced until the 1960 season when a hefty shunt at Riverside ended its contemporary racing career. The remains were eventually acquired by Maserati historian Joel Finn but it was not until the 1980s when the car was completely rebuilt by Mark Goyette while in the ownership of Virgil Milette. The damage was substantial and a lot of components needed to be replaced. Original parts, some salvaged from 4507, were understood to have been used wherever possible. The car has only rarely been seen since its mid-1980s rebuilt.
