Completed in June of 1966, this is one of 29 Cobra 427 S/Cs produced. Painted Ivy Green, it was originally sold to S&C Motors in San Francisco for the princely sum of $7,395. Its first know private owner was Peter van Valen, who acquired the Cobra from S&C Motors in October of 1966. It changed hands twice in short succession and was acquired by third owner Ken Bender late in 1967. He had the car repainted in McDonald’s red and yellow as his family owned several franchises of the fast-food restaurant. Bender raced the car with considerable success, winning the local SCCA championship in 1969 and 1970. He would retain the rare 427 S/C until it was acquired by marque historian Ken Eber in 1981. By that time, it had been painted Guardsman Blue with grey stripes. In Eber’s custodianship, it was re-finished to red and used extensively on the road. Sold on in 1987, it was soon after painted black before it was entrusted to specialist Mike McCluskey for a sympathetic restoration during the 1990s. In 1998, it entered the long-term ownership with a prominent American collector of mid-century American racing cars. Shortly after acquiring the Cobra, it was entrusted to a meticulous, six-year restoration. The rebuilt, big-block engine was tested and produced a staggering 544 bhp at 6,000 rpm. From a 25-year single ownership, this championship winning Shelby Cobra 427 S/C was consigned to the 2024 RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale.
