Chassis:
An early Type 57, this example was ordered as a rolling chassis by a Mr. Widerkehr. He then sent it to Gangloff where a four-door berline body was fitted. Widerkehr would own the car until the late 1930s and it was at some point re-bodied with a Stelvio style cabriolet by Gangloff. It is not entirely certain if this was during Mr. Widerkehr’s ownership. He sold the car back to Bugatti and it was then reportedly found under a haystack by a Mr. Gros from France. Following a brief spell in Switzerland during the late 1950s, it was sold to the United States, where it was acquired by Johh J. Risch in 1967. He regularly used the car and won the ‘Best of Show’ trophy at the 1968 New Hope Automobile Show in Pennsylvania. Following his passing in 1991, the car was inherited by his son John J. Risch Jr. In 2016, it was shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where it was awarded second in the Pre-War Preservation class. Having been in single family ownership for over 50 years, it was acquired by Dutch enthusiast Jack Braam Ruben in 2021. From his collection, it was consigned to the 2024 Gooding & Co. London Auction.
