Chassis:
One of America's premier designers, Gordon Buehrig penned two Speedster designs for the Weymann Body Company. The first was for short wheelbase chassis and known as the 'Tapertail' Speedster, and the second for a supercharged long wheelbase chassis, dubbed the 'Fishtail' Speedster. The featured 'Tapertail' was Buehrig's favourite as the Speedster shape looked more at home on the shorter chassis. The lack of running boards and the sweep panel paintscheme add further elegance to Buehrig's design. It was commissioned by Walter Varney, who was a pilot and businessman. His air mail operation would form the basis of what is now known as United Airlines.
In 1987, the one-off Duesenberg was acquired by retired Major General William Lyon. From wealthy insurance man Rick Carroll. Lined up alongside the 'Fishtail' Speedster, the 'Tapertail' was shown by its longterm custodian at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where Duesenberg was the featured marque. In 2026, it was entered in The Amelia, where it was awarded ‘Best of Show – Concours ‘Elegance.’
