Chassis:
Although completed in June of 1982, this 037 was not used until the 1983 Circuit of Ireland rally. It did serve as a test and development vehicle for the Evo 1 specification. Driven by Pentti Airikala, it was not classified at its competitive debut as it exceeded the time limit. It was then pressed into serviced by the Lancia Martini Racing team. In the hands of Walter Röhrl it won the Rally of New Zealand and was then driven to victory in the Rallye San Remo by Markku Alén. Early in 1984, it was sold and in July of the same year, it passed into the ownership of Corrado Tiziano. He did not use the car himself but instead leased it to Spanish team La Bamba Competition. They fielded the car for Manuel ‘El Vaguero’ Rodriguez, who raced chassis 301 well into the 1988 season. ‘El Vaqeuro’ was very competitive with ‘his’ 037 evidenced by a victory in the 1988 Rally Isla de Gran Canaria. Tiziano sold the car in 1990 and it changed hands just several times before it was acquired by an enthusiast in 2009, who had it restored to its Rally San Remo configuration and specification. Through Girardo & Co. the only 037 to win two World Championship rallies was sold to its latest custodian.
