Chassis:
Completed in May of 1931, this J was fitted by Murphy with the striking Disappearing Top Convertible Coupe body. Its first known owner was Blake Garner, who had the car in Chicago in 1936. He was a successful investment banker turned movie producer and the Duesenberg moved to Hollywood under his ownership. It changed hands several times during the 1940s and was owned on two occasions by Pacific Auto Rental. While in their second, long-term ownership, it starred in the 1962 psychological thriller Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? alongside Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. It was later used in another movie and was also a regular in a television series. Following the passing of owner George Schweiger, the complete fleet of Pacific Auto Rental was sold to the Imperial Palace Collection in the mid-1990s. J-395 was subsequently acquired at auction in Las Vegas in July of 1995 by the late Oscar Davis. In 1998 a subsequent owner had the Duesenberg comprehensively restored by Brian Joseph’s Classic & Exotic Service. It was later owned by the Andrews Collection and treated to an extensive mechanical service by marque specialist Joseph once again. Over two decades after the original restoration, it was shown at Pebble Beach in 2024, where it was awarded third in class. In 2025, the latest custodian opted to realign his collection and consigned the Disappearing Top Convertible Coupe to the RM Sotheby’s Miami sale.
