Featured is one of two A.H. Walker built Torpedo Phaeton bodies, which were commisioned by Duesenberg and sold under the LaGrande name. Its Gordon Buehrig design was almost identical to three other Torpedo Phaeton bodies constructed by Brunn and Weyman. The body was first fitted on chassis 2588 J-588, but its first owner believed that there was something wrong with it. Threatened with legal action, Duesenberg fitted the Torpedo Phaeton on 2608 J-582. It is believed to be one of just 36 factory equipped supercharged Duesenbergs.
In the car's early history it changed hands frequently, until it was heavily crashed in the middle of the 1940s. After being cannibalized for parts, plans for its reconstruction arose in the early 1960s. It took over a decade to track down most of the missing parts, and the work was started in 1973. The damaged chassis was discarded and chassis 2470 was modified to fit the LaGrande body. Sadly the project was not completed and the lot was sold to a new owner who eventually finished the work in 1987. He debuted the car at the CCCA Grand Classic and scored a perfect 100 points.
In 2005 the multiple concours winning Duesenberg SJ was offered by RM Auctions in their annual Vintage Motor Cars At Meadow Brook Hall sale. It was the auction's highlight and found a new owner for $1.5 million.
