A new works car built ahead of the 1987 season, this chassis was equipped with the dual-clutch PDK gearbox. Liveried in Rothmans colours, it was raced with the experimental gearbox throughout the year. This provided much smoother up- and downshifts but also had a weight penalty and was not quite as reliable as the manual gearbox. The latter did not hamper the car in the opening rounds of the season with Derek Bell and Hans-Joachim Stuck finishing on the podium four times in a row. It was then entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Jochen Mass, Bob Wollek and Vern Schuppan. Starting from pole position, the talented trio sadly suffered an engine failure early in the race. It was rebuilt to the latest specifications and re-liveried in Shell colours for the 1988 Le Mans. It was entered for Michael, Mario and Jeff Andretti. After qualifying third, the Andrettis had to settle for sixth in the race. Later that year, it was loaned to Vern Schuppan for several outings in Japan. With Schappen himself, Eje Elgh and Keiji Matsumoto at the wheel, it was driven to victory In the Fuji 1000 km. Still in Omron colours, it was then raced at Le Mans for a third time, with Gary Brabham joining Elgh and Schuppan. From 18th, they finished 13th overall. Elgh and Schappan gave chassis 962-008 its last contemporary outing at Fuji where they finished third in the 1989 edition of the 1000 km race. The car was returned to Porsche and restored to its 1988 Le Mans configuration and Shell colours, before it was sold to an American collector. In more recent years, it joined a prominent British Group C collection. During the early 2020s, it was restored to its 1987 configuration and Rothmans colours. In 2025, it was demonstrated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as part of a tribute to the late Jochen Mass.
