Chassis:
The very first MP4/6 produced, chassis 1 was used extensively for test and development work. It was also entered in the Brazilian Grand Prix for local hero Ayrton Senna. He qualified the car on pole position for the second round of the World Championship. After a great start, Senna gradually built up a sizeable lead and looked set to score a dominant win until his gearbox started to falter. On lap 50 of 71, he lost fourth gear and then third and fifth also broke, forcing the Brazilian complete the final laps in sixth gear only. He did hold on and eventually grabbed what he described as hardest victory of his career with less than three seconds over the Williams of Ricardo Patrese. Not raced again, chassis MP4/6/1 returned to its test and development role before its retirement in October of 1991. It was then retained by McLaren for nearly three decades until it was finally recommissioned and returned to full running order for a new owner in 2020. Its first private custodian then custodian then consigned the car to RM Sotheby’s for a sealed auction, scheduled for December 8 – 11, 2025 with a pre-sale estimate of $12 - $15 million.
