Chassis:
Known as the "Whittell Mistress" car, chassis 2305 J287 is one of seven Duesenbergs ordered new by the company's best customer, Captain George Whittell Jr. The car was clothed by Murphy of Pasadena with a very elegant 'Sport Berline' body designed by Franklin Hershey. Unusually no wood was used to support the body. Instead aluminium was used throughout. The doors of the unique machine extend into the very low roof.
Completed early in 1931, the car was gifted by Whittell to Jessie McDonald, which is how the car earned its nick-name. Beautifully preserved, the unique Duesenberg has passed through the hands of some America's most prominent collectors including J.B. Nethercutt, Bill Harrah and Oscar Davis. Its most recent custodian was John O'Quinn. He, sadly, was involved in a fatal accident late in 2009 and 'J287' was offered by RM Auctions in the 2010 edition of their annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance sale. The one-off Duesenberg was estimated to sell for $1.2 - 1.5 million but went on to top the day's sales with a winning bid of $1.7 million.
