Chassis:
When it became clear that the TG183B had to be used at the start of the 1984 season by prominent new signing Ayrton Senna, the Toleman team decided to build a brand new chassis for the young Brazilian. Chassis TG183-05 fittingly debuted in the hands of Senna at the Brazilian Grand Prix where Senna immediately out-qualified his team-mate Johnny Cecotto. A turbo failure on lap eight ended his charge very early. Starting 13th, Senna then finished sixth in the South African Grand Prix, netting his first ever World Championship point. In a weekend overshadowed by a conflict with tyre supplier Pirelli, Senna failed to qualify chassis TG183-05 for the San Marino Grand Prix. The car’s final contemporary outing came at the French Grand Prix, where another turbo failure forced Senna to park the Toleman after a mere 13 laps. With the TG184 ready for the Monaco Grand Prix, the TG183s were retired from active duty. Retained by Toleman, Senna’s first ever Grand Prix was eventually sold in 1992. It spent many years in the United States until it was returned to United Kingdom in the second half of the 2010s. While in the ownership of a long term custodian, it was prepared by Geoff Page Racing and regularly demonstrated by the likes of Pierre Gasly and Martin Brundle. In 2026, it was consigned to the RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale.
