Chassis:
Constructed to the initial A1 specification, this Group B Quattro was first used at the 1983 Rallye Monte Carlo by Hannu Mikkola. He scored two stage wins and eventually finished fourth overall. The Finn’s second out with ‘R38’ was at the Rally of Portugal where he drove it to ten stage wins and the outright victory. It was then returned to the Audi Sport workshop where it was upgraded to A2 configuration. In this guise, Mikkola grabbed eight stage wins and lead the Acropolis Rally until the engine expired on stage 40. Not driven again by Mikkola, it was entrusted to Lasse Lampi for the 1000 Lakes Rally, which was won by Mikkola in a sister car. Ahead of the 1984 season, R38 was sold to Austrian rally driver Walter Meyer. He campaigned it in the European Rallycross Championship, winning the Swedish round. It was then sold to Finland where it was raced in rallycross, ice racing, rally sprint and hill-climb events by subsequent owners until the 1996 season. In 2005, it was found in Finland and sold to France. Under the ownership of Benoit Antonel, VMS Compétition embarked on a sympathetic restoration, which was not completed until after the next owner acquired the car in 2023. During the meticulous process many of the battle scars were retained and the mechanicals were restored to full running order. Despite its lengthy racing career, R38 retains its original aluminium block and many of the period Kevlar body panels. Once again sporting the 1983 Rally of Portugal livery, it was consigned as one of the headliners to the 2026 Bonhams Monaco sale.
