Chassis:
Completed in September of 1959, this Tipo 61 Birdcage was delivered new to Joe Lubin for Bob Drake to race. Finished in white with two blue stripes, it debuted late in 1959 with third and second place finishes at Riverside. Drake then raced the car during the first half of the 1960 in SCCA events, scoring five outright victories. In May of that year, ownership changed to Stan Sugarman, who continued to field it for Drake and subsequently Jim Connor and Jim Hall through to the end of the year. In October of 1961, it changed hands again and was only raced once before it was retired from contemporary racing. It changed hands several times before it was acquired in 1976 by Steve Earle, who was the founder of the Monterey Historic Races. He duly had it restored by Stephen Grisworld for historic racing. Chassis 2452 had a handful of prominent owners, who continued to campaign the car before it joined a spectacular private collection in 1998. Following a nearly three-decade single ownership, it was consigned to the 2026 Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach Auctions with several other cars from the same stable.
