Chassis:
The featured R4A is the very first ERA sold to a customer. That customer was Pat 'Skidder' Fairfield, who had his 1.1 litre ERA prepared throughout the 1935 season by the factory. He scored quite a few victories, even against much larger engined competition. In 1936 a larger, 1.5 litre was fitted and the successes continued. At the end of the decade, the ERA started to its age and was retired. Today R4A is fitted with a 2 litre engine and is regularly raced in historic events. It is seen in action above at the 2006 Monaco Historic Grand Prix where it was qualified on pole in its group. Technical problems prevented it from making it to the grid. Seventy years earlier R4A also had problems in Monaco when it was disqualified after a push-start.
