Chassis:
Originally conceived as a Formula 2 car in 1949, this early Ferrari was acquired new Juan Manuel Fangio with backing from the Argentinean government. Entered by Scuderia Ferrari, the car was driven to a debut victory in the July 1949 Grand Prix of Monza. At the next outing, chassis 011F was refinished in the Argentinean racing colours of blue with a yellow engine cover. Later that season, the car was fitted with a supercharger and campaigned in several Formula Libre races in South America by Fangio and a Mr Campos. Upon its return to Europe, it was raced in Formula 2 guise again by Fangio but with little luck. In Formula Libre guise, the car was returned to Argentina and raced on the South American continent by Froilan Gonzales. The car remained in Argentina until it was found by Colin Crabbe during the late 1980s. He imported the car to the UK where it was comprehensively restored by Tony Merrick. Among its subsequent owners were noted collectors Carlos Monteverde and Christopher Cox. The current, German custodians acquired the ex-Fangio Ferrari 166 FL in 2003.
