Chassis:
This is the first of two eight cylinder engined 'SPs', s/n 0798. It started life with a 2.4 litre V8 engine, but before it started racing the engine was upgraded to 2.6 litre. It was entered by the factory in the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans race where gearbox problems caused a premature end of the race. It was subsequently sold to the United States, but it never proved very reliable. Shortly after its retirement, the car was added to Pierre Bardinon's vast Mas du Clos collection in 1969 where it remained for nearly 30 years. During this period, it was restored with the help of Fantuzzi. After changing hands in 1997, it was owned by the same American custodian for the next 24 years. He regularly showed and raced the cars during the late 1990s and early 2000s. In August of 2021, chassis 0798 found only its third owner in over five decades when it sold at the annual RM Sotheby's Monterey sale.
