Fitted with a unique Wunibald Kamm styled body, this is one of the five BMW 328s that participated in the 1940 Brescia Grand Prix, which replaced the Mille Miglia that year. It was the only example not to make it to the finish in the race won by a sister car fitted with a Touring coupe body. All five cars survived the War together and were only separated in the subsequent years. The Kamm Coupe was the only one to remain in Germany, in the ownership of former BMW racing director Ernst Loof. Sadly the car was destroyed some time in the 1950s and left at a scrapheap.

From the 1990s onwards, BMW's classic department has been working on a reconstruction of the one-off machine. With no drawings left, the engineers used old photos and computer calculations to get the lines just right. Celebrating the 70th anniversary of BMW's 'Mille Miglia' win, the project will be unveiled at the 2010 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.
